Val Thorens–Orelle plans to open November 21, while the full Three Valleys follows December 5. The purpose-built, high-altitude village reduces daily transfers and gives advanced skiers access to a vast linked domain while beginners can stay local.

The official adult six-day Three Valleys pass is €421 from December 19, compared with €378.50 from December 5–18. A seven-day peak pass is €486. Add equipment, lessons and accommodation separately; the pass is only one part of the festive premium.

Choose Val Thorens when convenience and snow-risk reduction outrank traditional village charm. It is especially practical when some friends want lessons, others want mileage and nobody wants a daily bus from a valley town.
6. Zermatt: the premium Christmas-card trip

Car-free Zermatt combines a real village, Matterhorn views and up to 200 kilometres on the Swiss pass; the international pass adds 160 kilometres in Cervinia and Valtournenche. It feels like a destination even on a weather day.

Gurgl plans to open November 19 and publishes a December 19–January 6 peak band. Its 112 kilometres of slopes run from roughly 1,800 to 3,030 metres, with 25 lifts and extensive snowmaking. It is smaller than the mega-domains but easier to understand.

Three-day and longer products upgrade to the Ötztal Superskipass across open participating resorts. The official page currently advertises three days from €212.50 and six from €404.50; early booking can change the quote.

Choose Gurgl for a ski-centred trip with reliable logistics, slope-side hotels and a less chaotic social scene. It is a better fit than St. Anton when the group wants good dinners and drinks without making après the trip’s identity.

Val d’Isère publishes a November 28–May 2 season. The village combines a classic centre with serious skiing and a broad hospitality range, making it attractive when the group wants both a resort atmosphere and extensive terrain.

Check whether the quoted pass covers the full Tignes–Val d’Isère area, then match lessons and lodging to the correct lift sector. A beautiful chalet far from the morning meeting point can create daily taxi or bus friction.

It suits mixed groups willing to pay for a polished French resort and who want non-ski options, restaurants and nightlife. Compare it directly with Val Thorens: atmosphere often favours Val d’Isère; convenience and altitude often favour Val Thorens.
