Prague Christmas Markets 2026: Old Town, Hotels and Weekend Cost

Prague’s Old Town Square is the postcard market, but sleeping directly beside it can make a group weekend noisier and pricier than necessary. Base yourselves on a useful tram or Metro line, then visit the famous square and smaller markets at different times of day.

1. Quick facts

Main season

Wenceslas Square: 28 November 2026–6 January 2027

Old Town

Major market at Staroměstské náměstí; check operator calendar

Other market

Náměstí Republiky: 25 November–24 December 2026

Airport

Trolleybus 59 to Nádraží Veleslavín, then Metro A

Prague’s market calendars are not interchangeable: the city tourism page lists Wenceslas Square through 6 January, while Náměstí Republiky closes 24 December. The Old Town operator and city page should be checked for final daily programme and holiday hours. Do not buy a hotel based on an assumed single “Prague Christmas market” end date.

2. Which market is worth your time

🎄 Old Town Square for the first look

Staroměstské náměstí has the large tree, stalls, food and a daily cultural programme described by Prague City Tourism. Make this the first evening for the spectacle, but expect its narrow approaches to fill. Meet the group a block away, perhaps near the Municipal House or a named café, rather than under the tree. Browse craft stalls with a real shopping list instead of treating every stall as a photo backdrop.

🧭 Wenceslas Square for a longer season

The official city calendar lists 28 November 2026–6 January 2027, 10:00–22:00, for Wenceslas Square. The square is long rather than compact: agree whether to meet by Můstek at the lower end or Muzeum at the upper end. It is easy to combine with Old Town on foot, but not every companion wants two dense markets back to back.

🎁 Náměstí Republiky and neighborhood alternatives

The official tourism listing gives 25 November–24 December for Náměstí Republiky. It sits close to the Municipal House and Palladium, useful for a shorter browse before dinner. Náměstí Míru in Vinohrady can feel more local; check its 2026 operator dates before making it the reason for a particular travel day. A smaller square is often where the group can actually talk.

🥨 Eat with a little skepticism

Try Czech baked goods, hot drinks and savory food, but read the displayed weight and price before ordering anything sold by the gram. Agree whether market food is a snack or dinner. For a proper seated meal, book a restaurant away from the densest tourist lanes and make space for vegetarian companions rather than assuming sausages will suit everyone.

Pick one anchor market each day and one fixed dinner meeting place. Put the precise address, booking holder and cancellation terms in the shared plan; the markets remain flexible even when friends arrive at different times.

3. Hotels: pay for a route, not a postcard address

🏨 Old Town and Josefov

A room near Staroměstská keeps the main square and riverside easy to reach, but streets can be loud and premium rooms small. Check stairs, late reception and twin-bed availability. The square itself is a crowded meeting point; choose a nearby hotel lobby as the regrouping spot. Compare at least two rooms and their actual cancellation terms.

🚉 Nové Město and Náměstí Republiky

A hotel near Náměstí Republiky, such as Motel One Prague–Florentinum on Na Poříčí, gives access to Metro B, trams and a walk to Old Town. It can be easier for airport arrivals than weaving luggage over cobbles in the deepest historic lanes. Check the exact walking route: Prague 1 covers more ground than a single neighborhood label suggests.

🍷 Vinohrady and Malá Strana

Vinohrady around Náměstí Míru is a good choice for restaurants and a less tourist-focused evening; Metro A connects toward the airport bus interchange and the centre. Malá Strana is scenic for Castle-side sightseeing but its slopes and cobbles are harder with winter bags. The cheapest apartment in either area only works if its bed count and local rules suit the entire group.

💰 Room price planning

Model a three-night stay at 2,400–4,400 CZK per twin room per night for a planning exercise, then check real refundable quotes and tourist charges. Four friends sharing two rooms would reserve 3,600–6,600 CZK each. December weekends can exceed that model, especially around the opening and New Year; do not present it as an advertised offer.

4. Arrival and public transport

✈️ Use the airport’s recommended 59 route

Prague Airport recommends trolleybus 59 from Terminal 1 or 2 to Nádraží Veleslavín, then Metro A. Bus 100 reaches Zličín on Metro B. Choose based on the hotel’s station rather than automatically following a taxi queue. Each traveler should activate or validate the correct PID ticket before boarding and allow time for the Metro interchange with luggage.

🚇 Time-based PID tickets

Prague Integrated Transport sells 30- and 90-minute tickets as well as 24- and 72-hour products. A group using several trams per day can compare a pass with individual tickets; a central hotel and long market walks may make the pass unnecessary. Paper and app prices differ, and the airport express AE is a different product from ordinary public transport. Check current tariff at purchase.

🚶 Walk between the two famous squares

Old Town Square to the lower Wenceslas Square is a short central walk via the pedestrian streets, but crowds slow it considerably. Keep valuables close and pick a precise meeting pin. Use trams for Castle-side sightseeing; do not treat historic paving as an effortless route for a person with mobility needs.

5. A three-day market itinerary

🧳 Friday: arrive, check in, Old Town

Land with enough time to reach the hotel before dinner. Walk to Old Town Square in the evening, then retreat to a reserved table away from the busiest frontage. If someone’s flight is delayed, they can join dinner without trying to locate the group amid the tree-light crowds.

🏰 Saturday: Castle side and a second market

Start at Prague Castle or a riverside walk if the group has energy, then lunch in Malá Strana. Use a tram or walk back via Charles Bridge when conditions allow. Visit Náměstí Republiky or Wenceslas after dark; choose one rather than trying to maximize stall count. End at a booked Czech restaurant, with an accessible or indoor backup for rain and ice.

☕ Sunday: neighborhood breakfast and departure

Have breakfast in Vinohrady or near the hotel, then browse the Old Town stalls in daylight to buy gifts. Leave margin for the airport 59-to-Metro transfer and security. If the stay runs past Christmas, verify the specific market’s holiday calendar before promising a final-morning visit.

6. Budget and group decisions

🧮 Three-night per-person reserve

A four-person group in two twin rooms can plan 3,600–6,600 CZK for lodging, 450–950 CZK for local and airport travel, 2,100–3,800 CZK for meals and hot drinks, 500–1,600 CZK for paid attractions and 500–1,300 CZK for gifts or contingency. Total: 7,150–14,250 CZK before flights. These are editorial planning ranges, not fixed 2026 prices.

🧾 Protect the group from the usual surprises

Decide whether Castle admission, a river cruise or a concert is optional before anyone buys four tickets. Keep personal gifts and drinks out of the shared ledger. For a rental, confirm legal occupancy, cleaning fees and the bed setup. Ask whether someone is willing to lead an early-morning outing; do not quietly assume everyone will wake up for it.

✅ Book in the right sequence

Pick dates by actual market calendars, hold a refundable room near a transport route, compare flights, then reserve dinner and any paid cultural event. Market entrance itself does not require a generic third-party “Christmas market ticket.” Put a meeting point, address and ticket links in the group plan.
