ATHX London 2027: Complete Event and Travel Guide to ExCeL
For ATHX London, a Royal Docks hotel or a straightforward Elizabeth line connection is usually more useful than a famous central address: your ExCeL hall entrance and booked competition day should decide where the group sleeps and how it travels.
1. ATHX London: dates, venue and entry
Dates
Saturday 23 to Sunday 24 January 2027
Venue
ExCeL London, 1 Western Gateway, London E16 1XL
Displayed entry
£125 individual; £225 per pair before any checkout extras
Station distinction
Custom House serves the west side; Prince Regent is useful for the east entrance
The organizer lists an 08:00–18:00 heat-selection window, not your individual appointment. Check the booked day, division, final arrival instructions and hall before choosing a flight or restaurant time. January weekend engineering works and 2027 fare changes need the live operator planner.

2. Choose the correct 2027 entry before planning the weekend
Start from the official London 2027 event page and choose the division, individual or pairs format and available day or heat. The advertised prices are £125 for an individual and £225 for a pair at this review. Save the final checkout total and category, especially if a friend handles the booking. Two event dates do not mean every athlete competes on both days, and your travel should follow your own confirmation. Supporters need to check their access separately rather than assuming the competitor’s booking admits an entire group.
🎟️ A pairs entry is £112.50 each when split equally
That calculation uses the displayed £225 team price before extras. Decide who pays, confirm partner details and check the division together. A later partner substitution or withdrawal depends on ATHX’s actual terms, so do not promise a free change as part of the travel plan.
🏋️ Read the 2027 workout page
ATHX publishes a separate 2027 workout program, including strength elements such as shoulder-to-overhead, back squat and deadlift. Use the current page and movement standards for your division; do not carry a 2026 equipment or workload assumption into a new season. Ask ATHX when an instruction is unclear.
📅 Keep the competition day visible
Put the confirmed date and heat beside the hotel and flight, not in a separate screenshot nobody can find. Friends on different days can still share the weekend, but each needs an independent morning routine and a clear plan for supporting the others.
3. ExCeL hotels: west side, east side or Canary Wharf
The venue stretches along Royal Victoria Dock, so a nearby hotel is not equally close to every hall. Aloft London Excel is on the eastern side, while ibis London Excel Docklands and Sunborn London are other named dock-area options to compare against your actual entrance. Canary Wharf can balance an event commute with a larger city stay. A central hotel can also work when the station route is simple, but count the journey in winter conditions rather than choosing solely from a tourist map. Compare refundable rates and twin beds before the group votes.
🏨 Aloft London Excel
Marriott gives its address as One Eastern Gateway, making it a useful eastern-campus shortlist. Compare the assigned ATHX hall and route before assuming it is the shortest walk. Ask about breakfast timing and luggage storage for your arrival and departure; an event-focused hotel can be worth more than a cheaper but awkward commute.
🛏️ ibis or Sunborn around the dock
ibis London Excel Docklands offers another named shortlist, while Sunborn is a yacht hotel with a different room experience. Check bed configurations, room access and total rate. A distinctive hotel may appeal to friends, but the athlete still needs quiet sleep and an easy morning route.
🚇 Canary Wharf or a central base
Choose a hotel by the exact station and service you will use to Custom House, then check the walk at both ends. A property described as Docklands can be on a different connection. Keep the pair in the same practical area where possible instead of creating two separate morning journeys to save a small amount.
4. Custom House, Prince Regent and getting to the correct entrance
ExCeL’s current transport guidance names Custom House for the west entrance and Prince Regent for the east entrance and ICC area. Custom House has Elizabeth line and DLR service; Prince Regent is a DLR station. The correct choice depends on the hall and entrance ATHX assigns, not simply on which station appears first in a search. Download the entrance instructions once released and allow for a walk along the campus. January 23–24 is a weekend, so inspect TfL’s planned service changes nearer departure rather than treating a normal weekday route as guaranteed.
🚆 Elizabeth line to Custom House
Use the service calling at Custom House and verify the train destination and any required change in TfL’s planner. This is a practical cross-London option from many central areas. It is still necessary to walk to the correct event entrance; a station arrival time is not an athlete check-in time.
🚊 DLR for another local route
Prince Regent may be useful for an eastern hall, while Custom House serves another approach. Check the exact route from your hotel and the final event gate. Do not confuse Royal Victoria, Custom House and Prince Regent as interchangeable stops with identical walks.
💳 One payment method per traveler
For contactless travel, use the same card or device to touch in and out and arrange a separate payment method for each person. Airport and rail products can have different conditions from a simple central journey. Recheck the fare and coverage for the actual route before buying several passes.
5. Which London airport makes sense for an athlete trip?
Compare the complete flight and hotel journey, not a low airfare in isolation. London City is close to the Docklands network and can be useful if your route exists; Heathrow connects into the Elizabeth line network but still needs the correct service and a realistic terminal-to-hotel plan. Gatwick, Stansted and Luton add their own rail or coach connections. An inexpensive late arrival can cost more once a taxi or extra night is required. Give friends separate arrival instructions when their airports differ rather than requiring the whole group to make one inefficient meeting journey.
🛬 London City
Check the DLR route and any changes for your hotel, including the last service if arriving late. Proximity is useful, but a flight time that lands after your planned check-in or before the room is available still needs thought. Do not assume a hotel offers an airport shuttle unless confirmed.
✈️ Heathrow
Inspect TfL’s current Elizabeth line journey to Custom House or your hotel, including the terminal and train destination. Some journeys require a change. Check the route price and bag handling before comparing a private transfer; a direct-looking line on a map does not eliminate terminal walking or waiting.
🧳 Other airports or a mainline arrival
Count every rail, coach and local transfer from Gatwick, Stansted or Luton, or from your London arrival station. A Friday evening arrival can work well for a Saturday heat when it includes a sensible buffer. Avoid a competition-day flight that only works if nothing is delayed.
6. A three-night itinerary: Friday 22 to Monday 25 January
Arrive Friday, use Saturday and Sunday around the actual event bookings and leave Monday. Three nights remove the need to rush to an airport after a Sunday heat and allow friends competing on different days to share the trip. If everyone competes Saturday, Sunday can be a city day; if some compete Sunday, keep it a supporter-and-local-activity day instead. A two-night version is possible, but choose the return journey around your own finish and check-in requirements rather than assuming every race is in the morning.
📆 Friday: settle in near the route
Check the entrance, prepare your kit and pick breakfast before sleeping. A dockside meal and a brief walk are enough structure. Leave a late central-London restaurant for another evening rather than making the first night a long commute on unfamiliar transport.
🏋️ Saturday or Sunday: the heat is the anchor
Travel early enough for the athlete instructions, compete, change and eat before the main group meal. Supporters can build a separate café or sightseeing block around access that they actually hold. Do not sell an exact post-workout tour time as if all check-in and changing time is known.
🏙️ A free day: one London area
Choose Greenwich, Canary Wharf or a central neighborhood according to energy and transport service. Keep it to one coherent area, with an indoor alternative for cold or wet weather. A large sightseeing circuit can be less enjoyable than a café, one attraction and an unhurried meal after competing.
7. Breakfast, dinner and a realistic celebration
The Fox Excel is a named bar and restaurant near the venue, and Aloft’s Dockside restaurant is another hotel-area option to check. Use current menus and opening times rather than assuming an athlete’s early breakfast or late meal is available whenever needed. One shared dinner after the last relevant competitor has finished is enough social structure for many groups. Keep the more expensive celebration optional if budgets differ. Supporters can continue their evening while athletes rest without turning separate nightlife travel into a group obligation.
🥣 Ask about breakfast timing
A hotel breakfast included in the rate is only useful if it opens before your departure for check-in. Have a familiar alternative when it does not. Read the athlete guidance for venue food and bag rules before deciding what you can carry; the guide is not a replacement for individual nutrition planning.
🍽️ The Fox Excel
The venue’s location can make it convenient for a group meal, but compare the actual menu, reservation time and large-party terms. Ask about deposits or preorders and leave room for delays after a heat. A booking should have a clear address, not simply “the pub at ExCeL.”
🗳️ One vote, a firm decision
Shortlist two dinner options with a price range, set a response deadline and book once the group agrees. Keep optional sightseeing separate. It is easier to coordinate ten friends when the hotel and competition plan remain fixed and only the free-time choices vary.
8. A three-night London ATHX budget
For three nights with two sharing a room, an illustrative £130–£230 nightly room rate gives £195–£345 per person. Four days of food at £30–£50 adds £120–£200. Reserve £45–£85 for airport and local transport, £25–£60 for optional activities and £50–£100 contingency. The travel subtotal is £435–£790 per person; with displayed individual entry it becomes £560–£915 before flights or intercity travel, spectator tickets, insurance and checkout or hotel extras. These are planning ranges, not published January hotel quotes or fixed 2027 transport fares.
| Cost item | Range |
|---|---|
| Shared hotel, 3 nights | £195–£345 |
| Food, 4 days | £120–£200 |
| Airport and local travel | £45–£85 |
| Optional activities | £25–£60 |
| Contingency | £50–£100 |
| Travel subtotal per person | £435–£790 |
| With displayed individual entry, before extras | £560–£915 |
🧮 Six friends sharing three rooms
At £180 per room for three nights, the group pays £1,620, or £270 each before additional charges. One friend’s private room changes the split. Compare included breakfast and cancellation terms before ranking hotel offers by the headline price.
👥 Pairs and spectators
A pair splitting the displayed £225 entry pays £112.50 each before extras. Keep the actual competitor or supporter ticket attached to its owner. Airport travel from different terminals or cities can also be a personal cost, while a shared taxi should be divided among the riders.
📋 Save the deadlines
List the hotel refund deadline, who paid for each booking and what a dropout owes once a room is non-refundable. Check the event’s refund and partner-change terms directly. A flight change or injury does not automatically make every part of the trip refundable.
