ATHX San Diego 2027: How to Plan Your Trip, Hotels and Weekend Itinerary

ATHX San Diego suits a downtown hotel and a mostly car-free weekend: the Convention Center sits beside the waterfront and Gaslamp area, so friends can combine the competition with easy meals and a relaxed city day without building the trip around parking.

1. ATHX San Diego: date, venue and entry

Date

Saturday 23 January 2027

Venue

San Diego Convention Center, 111 W Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101

Displayed entry

US$129 individual; US$239 per pair before checkout extras

Airport planning

SAN is the local airport; Route 992 and the free SAN Flyer offer different transit approaches

The organizer lists heats within 08:00–17:30, not your personal start time. Standard adult MTS one-way fares rose to US$3 on 1 October 2026; older US$2.50 visitor advice can be out of date. Recheck January service and your assigned hall entrance before departure.

2. Book the right 2027 entry and give the pair one owner

Start from ATHX’s San Diego page, then choose the division, individual or pairs format and an available heat. The public listing displays US$129 for individual entry and US$239 for pairs as checked on 15 October 2026. Confirm the total, participant names and category at checkout; a headline price does not establish availability in every heat. If you are traveling as a pair, make one person responsible for registration and share the confirmation immediately. Supporters should check their own event access before assuming they can follow competitors into the same spaces.

💵 A pairs entry is US$119.50 each if split equally

That is half the displayed US$239 team price before fees. It is not the price of two individual entries. Agree who pays and how the partner reimburses them, then check the actual partner-change and withdrawal terms rather than assuming a later substitution is automatic.

🏋️ Use the 2027 program

ATHX publishes 2027 workouts separately from the 2026 season. Read the current workout and movement-standard pages for the chosen division before deciding what kit is permitted or how the event will feel. A travel plan can organize the day, but it does not replace official athlete instructions or a coach’s preparation.

⏱️ The public window is not your appointment

08:00–17:30 is the listed heat window. Your confirmation and final athlete information determine the actual arrival and check-in. Keep tours, restaurant deposits and flights away from a theoretical finish time; the whole day includes traveling, changing, eating and meeting friends again.

3. Where to stay: convention waterfront, Gaslamp or farther away

A hotel around the Convention Center, Gaslamp Quarter or nearby waterfront is a good starting comparison for a three-night trip. Hilton San Diego Bayfront and Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego are two named properties at different ends of the waterfront area. Map the actual hall entrance before deciding which is more convenient. Gaslamp can suit shared evenings, but a room directly above a lively street may not suit an athlete’s sleep. Mission Valley and beach districts can offer other room choices, yet each adds a different trolley or road journey that should be priced honestly.

🏨 Hilton San Diego Bayfront

Use the hotel as a venue-focused shortlist and compare its route to the actual ATHX entrance, room configuration and total charge. Ask about parking and additional fees if you are bringing a vehicle. A room near the venue is useful when someone wants to shower and rest before rejoining the group for dinner.

🛏️ Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

The hotel offers another waterfront base near Seaport Village and downtown attractions. Compare the walk along the Convention Center rather than treating all nearby towers as identical. Confirm twin or separate-bed availability and luggage storage for the last day before assuming a shared room fits every friend.

🌃 Gaslamp or a more distant base

For Gaslamp, choose the exact street and ask about quiet rooms. For a farther hotel, check the actual trolley route or price of repeated rideshares. A low nightly rate is less persuasive if it creates a difficult early arrival and another paid journey every time the group splits.

4. SAN airport: Route 992 and the SAN Flyer are different choices

San Diego International Airport lists Route 992 for a connection between the terminals and downtown, and the free SAN Flyer for a connection to Old Town Transit Center. Those are different routes, not two names for the same downtown shuttle. For a Convention Center hotel, compare the complete journey including the final walk, trolley or taxi. Check the terminal pickup point and operating hours for the actual flight. If several friends arrive together with bags, a taxi or rideshare can be practical, but price it at the arrival time instead of presenting a fixed fare.

🚌 Route 992 for downtown

Use the airport’s current route guidance and MTS planner for the stop nearest your hotel. The airport identifies Broadway and Kettner as a downtown connection point; that is not the athlete entrance. Add the last local leg and the time needed to walk with luggage.

🚐 The free SAN Flyer to Old Town

This can be useful when its onward trolley or rail connection matches your hotel. The shuttle itself being free does not make the onward transit free. Check the exact service and transfer before choosing it merely because the first segment costs nothing.

🧳 Late arrivals need a fallback

Give each traveler the hotel address and booking name, with a paid-ride option if a delay makes transit inconvenient. Friends landing at different hours can arrive independently and meet at the hotel. There is no need to make everyone wait at the airport for the last flight.

5. Trolley, walking and finding the correct hall

The Convention Center describes two trolley stops in front of its building and publishes local access guidance. Use Convention Center or Gaslamp Quarter as starting points to examine in the current MTS journey planner, then match the final walk to the ATHX hall entrance. Do not assume a map pin on Harbor Drive identifies athlete check-in along a long building. January weekend service and construction can change the best approach. If you drive, the organizer says garage payment is due on entry and no in-and-out or overnight parking is offered under the listed arrangements.

🚊 Use current adult fares

MTS’s approved fare changes took effect on 1 October 2026, with a standard adult one-way fare of US$3 on most services. PRONTO LIFE is a separate eligibility-based reduced program, not the default tourist fare. Check transfer and fare-capping conditions for the product you actually use.

📱 Validate before boarding

Follow MTS instructions to tap or scan the payment method on the platform or pay in the appropriate way for the bus. Keep each traveler’s fare separate. A group itinerary app or a screenshot of another friend’s fare does not replace a valid transit ticket.

📍 Walk when the hotel makes it simple

A downtown base may make the event and meals walkable, with transit reserved for the airport or a Sunday outing. Save the hall entrance and an outside reunion point for supporters. A modest extra room cost can be worth comparing against several separate vehicle pickups.

6. A three-night San Diego itinerary: Friday 22 to Monday 25 January

Arrive Friday, compete Saturday and use Sunday for a slower city day before Monday departure. Three nights let friends share an event trip without packing the flight home into the athlete’s finish window. A two-night version is also workable when the Sunday departure gives sufficient airport time. January can be pleasant for a waterfront stroll, but this is not a promise of beach weather or warm swimming. Keep an indoor option and one clearly optional paid activity so the plan survives tired legs or a change in the forecast.

📆 Friday: settle in and simplify

Check the hotel, save the entrance and choose a familiar early dinner nearby. Prepare kit and breakfast before sleeping. If you want to inspect the walk to the venue, make it short rather than turning the first evening into a long walking tour.

🏋️ Saturday: event, recovery, one meal

Use your actual heat as the anchor, with time for arrival, changing and food afterward. Supporters can plan a café or short waterfront walk around the sessions they can attend. Pick a later dinner that works for the last competitor rather than tying it to a predicted exact finish.

🌊 Sunday: waterfront or Balboa Park

A walk around the Embarcadero and Seaport Village is a compact option. Balboa Park is a separate outing with museums and gardens to compare; choose one activity rather than trying to tour the whole city. A Coronado ferry outing is another optional plan only if the current schedule and weather fit.

7. Restaurants, coffee and a celebration with an honest travel leg

Gaslamp and the waterfront give the group many menus to compare, but race-day food should be practical and familiar. Portside Pier is a named waterfront dining complex with Brigantine and other options, plus a coffee stop. It is a different location from the Convention Center, so include the walk or ride before reserving a post-event dinner. Check current menus, deposits and dietary choices for the group. Friends who want a more elaborate evening can make it optional while the athlete returns to the hotel or chooses an earlier meal.

🍽️ Portside Pier and Brigantine

The complex offers a useful waterfront shortlist for a celebration when the group agrees the price. Ask about the actual table location, reservation terms and timing for a large party. A bay view does not justify a tight booking that everyone can reach only if the event exit is instantaneous.

☕ Coffee as an easy meeting point

A clearly named café or hotel lobby can reconnect friends arriving from different activities. Put the address and time in the plan so no one guesses which waterfront coffee shop was intended. Keep breakfast separate if an early athlete cannot wait for a leisurely group brunch.

🥣 Prepare the food timing

Ask the hotel when breakfast opens and decide a familiar alternative if necessary. Check venue rules before carrying food or a large bag into the hall. Do not assume a refuel area covers all your personal needs before, during and after the event.

8. A three-night San Diego budget and group payment plan

For three nights with two sharing a room, an illustrative US$180–US$320 nightly room rate gives US$270–US$480 per person. Four days of food at US$40–US$65 adds US$160–US$260. Reserve US$35–US$80 for airport and local travel, US$30–US$70 for activities and US$60–US$100 contingency. The travel subtotal is US$555–US$990 per person; adding displayed individual entry gives US$684–US$1,119 before flights, hotel taxes or added charges, insurance, parking, spectator tickets and checkout extras. These are planning reserves, not live January quotes.

🧮 Four friends sharing two rooms

Two rooms at US$250 per night for three nights total US$1,500, or US$375 each before tax and extras. Someone who wants a private room should see the extra cost before the group books. A room package with breakfast may compare differently once all fees are included.

👥 Competitor costs stay with competitors

A pair splitting the displayed US$239 entry pays US$119.50 each before fees. Supporters should pay only for their own chosen access and activities unless another arrangement is explicit. Shared taxis should be divided by the actual riders rather than by every member of the chat.

📋 Record the refundable deadline

For each booking save the owner, price, paid amount and last cancellation date. Check entry-change rules through ATHX and hotel terms through the supplier. If one friend drops out after a room is non-refundable, the group should already know who covers the remaining share.
