NFL Melbourne Game 2026: Complete Travel Guide 🏈🇦🇺

Australia’s first NFL regular-season game is not a vague future announcement anymore. The San Francisco 49ers play the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, 11 September 2026 at 10:35 a.m. AEST. It is a Week 1 NFC West game, a historic first for Australia and an unusually early local kickoff.

That timing changes the trip: Thursday is the main fan-event day, game morning begins around 07:00, and North American visitors need a serious jet-lag plan. Here is the useful version—where to sleep, how tickets work, which MCG entrance route to use, what the three-day festival adds and what the weekend actually costs.

1. Confirmed Game Details

2. Put the Whole Weekend in One Plan

3. Tickets: What to Know Now

🎟️ Use the official Ticketmaster route

Tickets are mobile-only through Ticketmaster and NFL OnePass. Original releases began at A$95 for standing room and A$140 for general seats, but remaining official inventory checked on 1 September was far higher, with many listings around A$495 and above. Treat the price visible in your official cart—not the launch price—as today’s cost.

📱 Load every ticket before leaving the hotel

Barcodes became active on 11 August. Add tickets to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, or keep them available inside the authorised account. Screenshots and saved barcode images are not accepted. Transfer tickets to each adult before game morning so one dead phone does not hold up the entire group.

🛑 Do not improvise on resale

The NFL warns that unauthorised purchases cannot be verified at the scanner. Victoria also restricts above-face-value resale for declared major events. Use Ticketmaster’s authorised availability or transfer function and keep the purchase confirmation attached to the trip.

4. Where to Stay

🏙️ East CBD: best first-time base

Stay near Flinders Street, Federation Square or the eastern CBD. You can walk to the MCG through Birrarung Marr and William Barak Bridge in roughly 15–20 minutes, while restaurants, the festival and airport transport remain simple. This is the lowest-risk choice for an international group.

☕ Richmond: closest neighbourhood feel

Richmond puts you close to the stadium’s eastern side and within easy reach of Swan Street food and pubs. It is ideal for fans who prioritise game access over CBD sightseeing. Check the precise walking route because a property west of Richmond Station is much more convenient than one deep into the suburb.

🍸 Southbank: strong for groups, less direct

Southbank has large hotels, river dining and easy CBD access. The MCG is still walkable, but the route is longer than from Federation Square. It works when room configuration and nightlife matter more than shaving ten minutes from game morning.

🎨 Fitzroy: fun, but not the stadium shortcut

Fitzroy and Collingwood are excellent for bars, food and independent shops. Choose them for the weekend atmosphere, not because a map makes them look beside the MCG. You will still need a tram, train connection or a longer walk on an already early morning.

International arrivals: land by Tuesday evening if possible, Wednesday at the latest. Thursday gives you daylight, movement and the Kickoff Festival to reset your body clock. Landing Thursday night for a Friday 07:00 campus arrival is a bad gamble.

5. Getting to the MCG

🚶 Walk from the CBD

The official route starts at Federation Square, crosses Birrarung Marr and William Barak Bridge, and reaches the W1 campus entrance in about 15–20 minutes. For a central group it is easier than squeezing into one vehicle and removes the postgame pickup problem.

🚆 Train to Jolimont or Richmond

Jolimont is about two minutes from the N1/N2 entrances; Richmond is about five minutes from E2. Special services are planned every two to four minutes, and the official game guide says the maximum full daily public-transport fare is A$5.70. Check your line because Melbourne’s new Metro Tunnel changed several usual connections in 2026.

🚋 Tram routes have entrance logic

Routes 70a, 48a and 75a serve stops around Melbourne Park and Jolimont. Match the stop to the stadium side printed on the ticket rather than simply following the biggest crowd. Route 246 on Punt Road is another option for the eastern entrances.

🚫 There is no public event parking

The NFL’s guide explicitly says no public event parking is available at the MCG. If driving is unavoidable, pre-book a commercial CBD garage and walk. Rideshare drop-off points are on Lansdowne Street and Olympic Boulevard, but postgame traffic will still be slow.

6. Game-Day Timeline

06:30 Breakfast and ticket check

Eat before leaving, put every mobile ticket in a wallet, check the weather and carry only an approved bag. The stadium campus opens at 07:00.

07:15 Enter the Yarra Park campus

Clear security and ticket validation early, then use the food, merchandise and fan activations around Yarra Park. Any campus entrance works; the gate colour then guides you to the correct MCG entrance.

09:30 Be in the seating bowl

Do not spend the final hour in a merchandise line. Find seats, toilets and the group meeting point before the 10:35 kickoff.

14:30 Postgame festival or Richmond

Walk 400 metres over the bridges to the ticketed Melbourne Park festival, or let the crowd clear over lunch in Richmond. The official festival continues through Saturday evening.

7. Kickoff Festival and Weekend Plan

🎉 Thursday–Saturday at Melbourne Park

The NFL Kickoff Festival runs 10–12 September with exhibits, retail, flag-football clinics, American food, concerts, watch events and a postgame party. It requires a separate ticket: grounds passes started at A$49 on Thursday/Saturday and A$59 on Friday. Add the chosen session to the plan so nobody assumes the game ticket includes it.

🗓️ A sensible three-night shape

  • Thursday: CBD orientation, early festival session, dinner and early sleep
  • Friday: MCG game, postgame festival or Richmond, relaxed evening
  • Saturday: Queen Victoria Market, Fitzroy or an AFL finals plan if schedules align
  • Sunday: Great Ocean Road only with a full day; otherwise brunch and departure

8. Entry and Weather

👜 The NFL clear-bag rule applies

Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags may be no larger than 12 × 6 × 12 inches (30.5 × 15.25 × 30.5 cm); a one-gallon clear freezer bag also qualifies. Small permitted exceptions are defined by the NFL. The MCG adds its own prohibited-items rules, and no outside food or drink is allowed for this event.

🌦️ September can deliver four seasons

Prepare for a cool morning, wind and possible rain even when the afternoon forecast looks mild. Umbrellas cannot be raised in seating areas, so use a compact rain shell or poncho. Some seats can also catch direct sun; pack sunscreen inside the current entry rules.

9. Realistic Three-Night Budget

Game ticket

Launch-price standing through remaining official seating

A$95 - A$600+

Accommodation

Three nights in a shared central room

A$360 - A$900

Food and coffee

Three days plus game-day food

A$180 - A$360

Local transport

Airport connection and city travel

A$30 - A$60

Festival and merchandise

One festival pass plus optional gear

A$50 - A$250

Ground budget

Per person for three nights, before long-haul flights

A$715 - A$2,170+

💡 Pro Tip: Do not build the trip around the A$140 launch price if you do not already hold that ticket. Price the official seat currently available, then collect deposits.

10. Pack for the Actual Event

Melbourne NFL essentials
