How to Plan a Trip to the Los Angeles Olympics 2028

Los Angeles 2028 is spread across multiple venue zones, so the smartest first booking is not a flight or hotel: it is a shortlist of sports in places your group can realistically reach from one base.

1. Quick facts and the first decision

Games dates

July 14–30, 2028

Ticket position

The 2026 public drops have ended; LA28 says more first-come sales are planned for 2027

Planning unit

Choose one main venue zone per day

Recommended stay

At least five nights; seven for a multi-sport trip

As of 10 October 2026, LA28 has published venue zones and a competition schedule, but detailed spectator entry and Games shuttle instructions are still developing. Treat hotel and food costs below as planning estimates, not 2028 quotes.

2. Start with sessions, then dates

The official Games run from July 14 to July 30. Start with two or three must-see sports, check their actual sessions on LA28, and put each venue on a map. Artistic gymnastics at DTLA Arena and judo at LA Convention Center form a much easier same-zone pair than a Downtown morning followed by a tight Long Beach evening. A ticket is for a particular session, not a general pass to a sport.

🎟️ Ticket strategy

LA28 says Drop 2 was the final general-public release of 2026 and more first-come inventory will come in 2027. The organizer advertised at least one million $28 tickets and a third under $100, but those are program-wide quantities, not guaranteed prices for your chosen final. Use only official LA28 ticket routes, count checkout fees, and buy together if adjacent seats matter.

🗺️ Three manageable clusters

Downtown has DTLA Arena, LA Convention Center and Peacock Theater. Exposition Park contains LA Memorial Coliseum and Galen Center. Inglewood has 2028 Stadium and Intuit Dome. Long Beach is its own cluster, with Marine Stadium and several waterfront venues. Spend a full day in Long Beach rather than treating it as a quick detour.

🧩 A group decision that works

Let each friend mark one must-see, one nice-to-see and one sport they would skip. Purchase the overlap first. Friends can split for different sessions and reunite at a named station or restaurant; forcing everyone into the same expensive ticket creates unnecessary compromise.

3. Pick a base that matches your tickets

LA28 itself recommends lodging in or near the zone you will visit most. For Downtown-heavy plans, compare Residence Inn Los Angeles L.A. LIVE and Courtyard Los Angeles L.A. LIVE; both sit by the convention center and arena campus. For a Long Beach-heavy plan, compare Hilton Long Beach, Marriott Long Beach Downtown and the waterfront Residence Inn. Inglewood makes sense only if the group has several stadium or dome sessions.

🏨 Downtown for variety

Downtown gives the simplest walk between several indoor venues and rail connections to Exposition Park and Long Beach. A room near L.A. LIVE can cost more, but it saves repeated late-night cross-city returns. Check actual walking distance to the Metro stop and hotel entrance, not only the neighborhood name.

🌴 Inglewood for swimming or basketball

The venue named 2028 Stadium is the SoFi Stadium site and is scheduled for swimming. Intuit Dome is also in the Inglewood Zone. A stadium-district hotel such as The Anthem Los Angeles Stadium District can reduce a specific venue commute, but it is a weaker base for several Downtown and Long Beach days. Verify hotel walking routes and Games access nearer 2028.

⚓ Long Beach for the waterfront cluster

Hilton Long Beach and Marriott Long Beach Downtown are near the city center and waterfront. Residence Inn Long Beach Downtown has kitchens and breakfast but is across the channel from some central destinations; compare the actual walk or transfer. The Metro A Line reaches Downtown LA, yet this is a substantial ride, so do not put an early Downtown session after a late Long Beach night.

4. Arrive and move without guessing

LAX is the main international arrival point. Today, the LAX/Metro Transit Center connects with the C and K Lines and airport terminal shuttles; verify the exact terminal transfer before travel because airport infrastructure can change. LA Metro is planning a Games Enhanced Transit Service of venue shuttles and mobility hubs, but it has not provided a final route-by-route spectator timetable.

🚆 Use the existing rail spine

The E Line serves Expo Park/USC for the Coliseum area. The A Line links Downtown LA and Downtown Long Beach. These are useful planning anchors, not a promise that every venue gate is beside a rail platform. Add walking, security, queues and any Games shuttle to the journey.

🚌 Budget for last-mile transfers

A hotel close to a rail station is often more useful than a theoretically shorter road distance. For Inglewood, follow the final LA28 and Metro spectator instructions; do not assume ordinary SoFi parking or a direct rail-to-gate connection will be available.

💳 Current fare, future check

LA Metro currently caps regular fares at $5 per day and $18 in seven days when the same eligible payment method is used. That is a useful 2026 baseline, not a guaranteed 2028 Games fare. Keep a separate reserve for airport connections and occasional rideshares.

5. A realistic week in LA

Arrive a day before the first paid session and give the group one major zone per day. For example: Day 1 arrival and a short Downtown walk; Day 2 two Downtown sessions; Day 3 Exposition Park and a museum or garden break; Day 4 Inglewood; Day 5 a genuine free day at Santa Monica or Venice; Day 6 Long Beach; Day 7 one priority sport or a buffer session; Day 8 departure. Move these days to the dates of your actual tickets rather than booking a neat calendar and hoping the sport schedule fits.

⏳ Leave a session buffer

A morning and evening session in different zones can work; two near-adjacent tickets often cannot. LA28 advises ample time even within one zone. Keep a meal and transport buffer, and avoid prepaying a dinner immediately after the final of the day.

🍽️ Choose easy meeting places

For Downtown, the L.A. LIVE area gives a simple meetup near arena sessions. In Long Beach, Pine Avenue is a practical dinner area. A meeting point should be a precise address or station exit, because crowds may make mobile coverage and rideshare pickup awkward.

🤝 Split without losing the group

Share ticket holders, session end windows, the next meeting point and a backup contact. Keep optional sightseeing separate from essential sport travel. One friend can rest while others use a spare afternoon; there is no need to make a seven-day trip a forced march.

6. A per-person planning budget

For seven nights with two people sharing, an illustrative room of $220–$360 nightly yields $770–$1,260 per person before taxes and fees. Add $280–$490 for seven days of casual food, $60–$180 for local transit and occasional rides, and a $100–$250 contingency. The non-ticket, non-flight subtotal is $1,210–$2,180 per person. Add the real session-ticket basket and flights separately; premium finals and ceremonies can change the total dramatically.

🧮 Know what moves the total

The biggest variable is accommodation. Ask whether the quote includes tax, destination fees and actual beds. A refundable reservation can protect the group while 2027 ticket inventory develops, but read its cancellation deadline and whether the nightly rate changes across the stay.

💰 Set a ticket ceiling before a sale

Agree a maximum all-in ticket spend per person, plus a separate ceiling for any one final. Give one buyer permission to act only within that range. A cheap $28 seat elsewhere in the program does not mean the sport or session your friends want will be available at $28.

📋 Keep payments legible

Record who bought each ticket, who owns the hotel reservation, reimbursement dates and what happens if someone drops out. Keep optional meals and solo sightseeing personal; split shared rooms and transport by an agreed rule.
