How to Get Around the LA 2028 Olympics Without a Car

A car-free LA 2028 trip is possible if you choose a hotel near rail and treat Downtown, Exposition Park, Inglewood and Long Beach as separate venue days.

1. Quick facts and the first decision

LAX connection

Terminal shuttle to LAX/Metro Transit Center, then C or K Line

Existing rail anchors

E Line for Exposition Park; A Line for Downtown Long Beach

Games service

Metro plans extra venue shuttles and mobility hubs

Critical gap

Final 2028 spectator routes and operating times are not yet published

Use these existing 2026 routes as the starting network. LA28 and Metro may change stations, shuttle stops, event gate access, schedules and fare products before July 2028.

2. From LAX to a rail-connected hotel

At LAX, Metro directs travelers to a free airport shuttle from terminal arrivals under the pink LAX/Metro Connector signs. It reaches the LAX/Metro Transit Center on the C and K Lines. From there, choose the rail route to your hotel and count luggage, transfers and actual walking time. A hotel that looks near the airport on a map may still need a ride.

โœˆ๏ธ Downtown arrival

A Downtown hotel near 7th Street/Metro Center or Pico gives better onward access to multiple venue zones. Check the current Metro trip planner for the exact airport transfer; the combination may vary with the station and time of arrival.

๐Ÿงณ The group luggage test

Four people with large bags may prefer a prearranged shared vehicle after a long flight even if they use transit for every competition day. Compare the final car total with four transit fares, time and hotel check-in hours.

๐ŸŒ™ Late flight rule

Do not assume full-frequency rail or hotel reception after midnight. Confirm the actual arrival dateโ€™s service and save a backup pickup location before leaving home.

3. Downtown and Exposition Park days

DTLA Arena, the LA Convention Center and Peacock Theater form a useful Downtown cluster; LA Memorial Coliseum and Galen Center sit in the Exposition Park Zone. Existing E Line service stops at Expo Park/USC for the Coliseum area. A hotel near L.A. LIVE may allow walking to Downtown sessions and one straightforward rail journey to Exposition Park.

๐Ÿš‰ Choose the correct station exit

Map the ticketed venue entrance rather than only the venue name. Large security perimeters can shift the useful approach, so follow Games-specific instructions when issued.

โŒ› Leave a proper transfer window

Two sessions across Downtown and Exposition Park need time for venue exit, rail queues, walking, security and a meal. Avoid buying a second timed ticket that depends on perfect rail service.

๐Ÿจ Hotel examples

Residence Inn Los Angeles L.A. LIVE and Courtyard Los Angeles L.A. LIVE suit a Downtown-heavy schedule. Verify the actual path to the nearest station, especially for a late return.

4. Inglewood is the key last-mile question

LA28 lists 2028 Stadium at the SoFi site and Intuit Dome in the Inglewood Zone. The Metro K Line provides a regional rail anchor, but it is not a train directly into the stadium gate. Metro is planning Games Enhanced Transit Service to connect transit hubs and venues; the final spectator map will determine which transfer is useful.

๐ŸšŒ Plan the whole journey

Write hotel-to-station, train, shuttle or other last mile, security gate and expected return in one itinerary. A line on a rail map is only part of the trip.

๐ŸŸ๏ธ Stadium exit plan

Save a specific post-event meeting point outside the ticketed security area and the return boarding location once LA28 confirms it. A full stadium empties differently from an ordinary commute.

๐Ÿšซ Do not assume ordinary parking rules

Even if someone in the group rents a car, Games traffic management may restrict access. Follow the official venue instructions rather than an old concert parking guide.

5. Long Beach needs a full day

The A Line links Downtown Los Angeles and Downtown Long Beach. LA28โ€™s Long Beach cluster includes Marine Stadium, Long Beach Arena and waterfront sites, but they are spread across the city. An A Line train to Downtown Long Beach is not a direct drop-off at Marine Stadium or Belmont Shore.

โš“ Map each Long Beach gate

Pin the actual venue and reserve a local bus, Games shuttle, walk or shared ride as appropriate. Different Long Beach events can have very different last-mile needs.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Make it one outing

If you are coming from Downtown LA, allow a whole Long Beach day and a meal near Pine Avenue or the waterfront. A rapid return for a Downtown session removes the comfort of a car-free plan.

๐Ÿจ When to sleep locally

If several sessions are in Long Beach, compare Marriott Long Beach Downtown or Hilton Long Beach against a Downtown LA base. A closer hotel can remove two cross-city journeys per event day.

6. Fares, accessibility and failure plans

Metro currently caps eligible regular fares at $5 per day and $18 in seven days when the same payment method is used, with eligible transfers within two hours. These are current rules, not 2028 promises. Budget separately for LAX, occasional rideshares and any future Games service whose fare has not been announced.

๐Ÿ’ณ One payment method per rider

Use the same eligible card or device for each riderโ€™s fare-cap calculation. Do not tap an entire group on one device and assume each person earns a separate cap.

โ™ฟ Check the accessible route

Station elevators, walking distances and venue entry can change. Check Metro alerts and LA28 accessibility instructions for the specific event date; provide extra time for crowds.

๐Ÿ”‹ Store an offline fallback

Save ticket, hotel address, station map, exact meetup point and one backup route. A battery pack and agreed regrouping rule are useful when mobile signal is congested.

7. A no-car sample day

For a Downtown arena session, walk from a hotel by L.A. LIVE, pass security with a generous margin, eat nearby and walk back. For an Exposition Park session, take the E Line to Expo Park/USC and allow the gate walk. For Inglewood, use the final Metro rail-plus-Games-service instructions. For Long Beach, make the A Line and the local last mile a separate day.

๐Ÿ•˜ Keep one main zone per day

This reduces missed sessions and gives the group room to rest or separate for different sports.

๐Ÿ“ Pick a precise meetup

Use a named station entrance or business address, not โ€œoutside the stadium.โ€ The group can split seats or sports and still find one another.

๐Ÿงฎ Compare whole-trip cost

A rail-adjacent hotel may cost more nightly but save repeated paid rides, parking and time. Compare it with the entire transit plan before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I attend LA 2028 without renting a car?

Yes, many plans can use existing rail and planned Games shuttles, but the final venue-specific route should be checked once LA28 and Metro publish it.

Does the train go directly to SoFi Stadium?

No. The K Line is a regional anchor; plan for an additional last-mile connection and use final Games instructions.

How do I get to Long Beach from Downtown LA?

The Metro A Line connects Downtown LA and Downtown Long Beach. Individual Olympic sites may need an additional bus, shuttle, walk or shared ride.

Are 2026 Metro fares guaranteed for 2028?

No. Current caps are a baseline, not a published Olympic fare plan.
